Riding in Mauritius
Mauritius is a volcanic island nation in the Indian Ocean, roughly 900km east of Madagascar. Covering just 2,040 km², it punches well above its weight as a motorcycle touring destination — the coastal roads offer constant ocean views, the interior climbs through tropical forest and tea plantations, and the island's diversity means the scenery changes completely every 20-30 kilometres. The road from the north coast through Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux, around the east coast past Belle Mare, and back through the south via Mahébourg is one of the great island circuits.
Riding conditions in Mauritius are generally good — roads are sealed throughout, the climate is warm year-round, and distances are manageable. The dry season from May to November offers the most consistent weather for riding, with lower humidity and cooler temperatures in the early morning. The central plateau around Curepipe sits at over 500m elevation and can be cooler and cloudier than the coasts, providing a natural contrast mid-ride.
The Mauritian riding community is growing, with H.O.G. chapters based on the island organising regular coastal runs, charity rides and beach destination events. Global Rider chapters in Mauritius use the platform to coordinate rides, post events and connect with visiting international riders passing through the island.
