Best Harley-Davidson Rides in Scotland

8 July 2026By Global Riderscotland, nc500, highlands, europe, riding routes

Scotland offers some of the most dramatic motorcycle roads in Europe. From the North Coast 500 to the passes of Glencoe, here is your guide to riding Scotland on a Harley.

Scotland on a Harley

Few places on earth match Scotland for sheer riding drama. Empty roads, sea lochs, mountain passes, and a sky that changes every ten minutes — Scotland rewards every mile on a Harley-Davidson with scenery that genuinely takes your breath away.

The North Coast 500

The NC500 is Scotland's answer to Route 66 — a 500-mile circular route around the far north of the country. Starting and finishing in Inverness, the route takes in Torridon, Applecross, Cape Wrath, and the flow country of Caithness.

The Bealach na Ba on the Applecross peninsula is the highlight: a narrow, switchbacking climb to 626 metres with gradients up to 20% and views across to Skye.

Key NC500 tips:

  • Allow 5-7 days to do it properly
  • Book accommodation well ahead — busy from May through September
  • Fuel stops are sparse on the north coast — fill up whenever you can

Glencoe and the West Highlands

The A82 through Glencoe is arguably Scotland's most iconic road. The glen opens dramatically as you ride south, with the Three Sisters rising on your left and Rannoch Moor stretching ahead. On a still morning with low cloud lifting off the peaks, it is one of those rides you remember for life.

The Cairngorms

The A939 from Grantown-on-Spey to Ballater crosses the Lecht pass through the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. Royal Deeside follows the River Dee through forested landscape, passing Balmoral and finishing at Aberdeen.

Practical Information

Best time to ride: May to September. June and early July offer the longest days and often the driest weather.

Finding riding companions: Use Global Rider to find Scottish H.O.G. chapters and independent clubs — many organise group rides on the NC500 throughout the summer.
